Where does guacamole come from?

Updated: Oct 22, 2021

Guacamole is a Mexican sauce that provides us with natural vegetable fats, vitamins, potassium and fiber. We are going to tell you the origin of this delight.

Aztec origin

The most accepted theory is the one that says that the Aztec culture was the creator of this sauce, probably during the 15th century, it even has a name in the Nahuatl language: āhuacamolli, which does not mean anything other than “avocado sauce”.

When the Spanish invaders arrived in Mexico, they were delighted with the dish, and since avocado was not grown in Europe, they created their own versions, but none were satisfactory, so they began to grow avocado in Europe.

Modern guacamole

Today, avocado remains the fundamental ingredient, combined with other ingredients originating in Mexico, such as onion and tomato, seasoned with lemon, garlic and coriander.

This sauce is the favorite to accompany Mexican food, especially tacos, tostadas, and nachos. The versatility of this sauce allows it to be used in imported dishes, such as hamburgers or egg toasts, even arepas.
